In a significant leap towards sustainable energy practices, Glasgow Airport has commenced work on what is slated to be Scotland's largest airport-based solar farm. The venture, undertaken in collaboration with energy developer Ikigai Group, has successfully reached financial close with Zestec Renewable Energy, culminating in an investment of approximately £18.5 million.
Situated on a 40-acre plot adjacent to Barnsford Road, the ground-mounted solar array will be constructed in phases to accommodate the airport's current and future energy needs. The project aims not only to power Glasgow Airport but also neighboring businesses seeking access to affordable energy solutions.
Owned and operated by Zestec, a company under the umbrella of funds managed by Octopus Energy Generation, the solar farm is anticipated to produce energy equivalent to illuminating about 15% of homes in the city of Glasgow upon completion. The first phase of construction is expected to conclude by the summer of 2024.
Ronald Leitch, Operations Director of Glasgow Airport, emphasized the project's significance in the airport's sustainability journey, contributing to on-site clean energy generation. He expressed optimism about meeting decarbonization goals and supporting the net-zero aspirations of airport partners and neighboring entities. Leitch also highlighted the solar farm's role in laying the groundwork for transforming the airport into an energy hub and supporting zero-emission flight initiatives.
Helena Anderson, Chief Operating Officer at the Ikigai Group, revealed ongoing collaborative efforts with the airport, extending to additional on-site energy solutions such as electric vehicle charging and green hydrogen production, with solar energy acting as a cost-effective enabler.
Zestec, selected through a tender process led by Ikigai, will oversee the development, construction, procurement, and operation of the solar farm. Toby Smith, Chief Operating Officer of Zestec, expressed enthusiasm about integrating the solar plant into their suite of behind-the-meter solutions designed to aid Glasgow Airport in its decarbonization endeavors.
